Su fuerte carga emocional puede provocar intensas reacciones cognitivas, conductuales , emocionales y a veces también físicas que sostenidas en el tiempo se pueden transformar en un trastorno de estrés postraumático , difícil de superar sin ayuda profesional especializada .En el caso del aborto voluntario se ha comprobado la existencia de un Sindrome Post Aborto (SPA) que comparte muchas de las características del trastorno de estrés postraumático ( TEPT).
